ARMENIANS OF CILICIA
(Lesser Armenia)
1080-1375 AD
|
Starting with the 9th century, mass movements of Armenians to central and southern Anatolia began to take place. These was partly a result of Byzantine foreign policies and partly a result of the Seljuk invasions. After Manzikert, the Byzantines lost control of much of their eastern territories, and a Byzantine general, who was an Armenian in origin, named Philaretus, encouraged armenian princes to settle in his domain between the Euphrates and Cilicia, in hopes of establishing an Armenian dynasty. Instead, one of these princes, Roupen, who claimed descent from Gagik II, the last king of Ani, after a series of long struggles, succeeded in establishing his authority in the mountainous regions of Cilicia. So, a new Armenian dynasty started, which bore his name, Roupenian. This is generally held to have occurred in 1080. |
